Beauty Basics: Makeup Starter Kit.

Whether you wear makeup everyday, on special occasions or just to work, these items are the foundation for every girl's makeup kit (no pun intended):

Foundation or Tinted Moisturizer. Finding the right foundation for your skin type is essential.  Using the wrong shade, undertone, or formula will leave you with a disastrous face, regardless of how well the rest of your makeup is applied.  So, if you're going to splurge on one item or make up, it should be foundation because finding the perfect foundation at a drugstore can be difficult (and expensive, if it ends up involving a lot of trial and error).  I'm a fan of heading to the department stores where there is a knowledgeable associate to help you make the right decision.  You'll have to figure out what formula you desire (Cream, Cream to Powder, Stick, Liquid, Powder, Mineral Powder, Tinted Moisturizer) based on your desired level of coverage (Full, Medium or Light) and skin type (Oily, Dry, Normal, Combination or Sensitive).  Also, be aware of your skin's undertone (Warm or Cool) because it will make eliminating the wrong shades for you much easier.

Concealer. Whether you have dark circles under your eyes, blemishes, hyperpigmentation,  or redness, concealer is a must for a flawless face.

Powder. A light coverage powder applied on top of your foundation or concealer to set it in its place and will leave your skin looking smooth.

Eyeliner (Liquid, Pencil or Gel).  Your upper lash line applied thinly at the inner corner and gradual thickening as it approaches the outer corner.  The level thickness is up to you.

Mascara. Decide if you want length or volume.  Colored mascaras available, but for your first tube stick with a dark brown or black.

Blush. The choice of color is yours, but pick a subtle color that still adds brightness to your complexion.

Lipstick/Lip Gloss/Lip Pencil. You have the rainbow at your disposal.  Pick a color that makes you happy.

Eyeshadows. To start, I'd suggest one color that is slightly darker than your skin color that has shimmer to it. And a dark brown or black for added dimension in your crease or doing smokey eyes.
